So I am aware that there is a huge trucker protest in D.C. today. Trucks are to circle the Capitol in order to shut down traffic then park their trucks and march to the Capitol to rally and demand Congress puts a 'CAP' on the price of crude oil, gas, diesel, heating oil, etc.
However noble this may appear on the outside, it’s quite the opposite upon further examination. How can capping the price of crude, and removing the basic fundamental idea of "FREE TRADE" be a good thing? How would we feel if the government told us we're only allowed to earn a set income each year? Once we mandate Congress to regulate the price of products traded on a 'Free Market', we move one step closer to inviting Communism into our Government.
How does shutting down traffic, in a region, benefit the cause of easing the burden at the pump, which every American feels? I am not sure how giving Mr. John Q Public, ANOTHER REASON, to see the trucker in a bad light is going to make your Congressman feel empathy towards the plight of high energy prices. These are the same trucks that tailgate and speed and fit every other stereotype that we constantly battle with. Trucks have a constant uphill battle with IMAGE, why add fuel to the fire?
And if you have been fooled by the email or theory that's in circulation, that boycotting certain gas stations, will help reduce crude prices, you need to rethink your ideas. If everyone stops buying at service station A and fill their vehicles at station B, sure Station A looses revenue but station B experiences a shortfall in product he can sell, hence increasing his selling price, the basis for SUPPLY AND DEMAND. In the end you still burn the same amount of product, regardless of where it’s purchased from. And the same amount of crude is still refined to fulfill our demanding thirst for oil. This theory also includes the "Don't Fill Up on Day X". You will still consume the same amount of product whether it's purchased on Monday at Station B or Friday at Station A.
If you want to make an impact on the rising cost of crude, which affects every single product sold or transported thru out the country, THEN THINK CONSERVATION. I am not saying go green or use ethanol or bio diesel. I am simply saying, slow down 5 MPH, turn off that light , don't idle your engine when it’s not necessary and turn the thermostat down a few degrees. These aren't ideas that are new, but they work. Maybe take the car that's better on fuel economy. Keep your vehicle properly maintained, check you air pressures.
What i am basically saying here, be responsible for yourself and don't blame our Congress, OPEC, or Chavez, for responsibilities that you don't want to abide by. I am in no way saying that high oil prices are entirely the consumers fault, but in a "Supply and Demand" economy, if you reduce demand, the supply becomes more affordable.
So let's rethink our battle here, maybe just maybe, we can protest in a manner that matters the most, it is defined by Conservation not Accusation.
